Indiana reaches propane overcharging settlement

– Indiana has reached a settlement with a northwestern Indiana propane supplier that overcharged customers during last winter’s propane shortage.

Attorney General Greg Zoeller (ZEHL’-ur) said Wednesday that Ashland Propane Demotte LLC has agreed to provide the affected customers with either a credit to their account or a refund.

Those customers will receive nearly $20,000 in restitution as part of the settlement with the Jasper County company.

Zoeller says Ashland Propane entered into contracts last fall with 93 Indiana residents for propane at a set price of about $1.49 per gallon, but as propane prices soared in January, the company told those customers it would not honor those locked-in prices.

Zoeller says some of the customers were charged up to $4.79 per gallon, or more than three times the agreed-on price.
