Body pulled from St. Marys River

A search of the St. Marys River that began Tuesday night after someone reported a splash in the river ended Thursday morning with a dead man being recovered from the water, authorities said.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department and Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officers had used divers, boats and sonar to search the area near Headwaters Park ever since receiving reports about 9 p.m. Tuesday that someone may have gone in the river.

A witness heard a splash east of the Harrison Street bridge but wasn’t sure what had happened and called emergency responders, according to Jim Price, a conservation officer on the media relations team.

A search of the river that night in the area of Headwaters Park on the west side of Clinton Street was unsuccessful, Price said.

The man, whose name was not yet released, was found at 9:47 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

The case was turned over to the Allen County Coroner’s Office for further investigation and identification of the man, Price said.
