To Pat Ashton, who wrote Aug. 24 regarding Ben Smith’s writing mastery: Thank you. Thank you for aptly saying what I have wanted to say ever since I read that Ben was leaving his desk at The Journal Gazette.
I’m a sports fan. I don’t follow every sport, I’m not hardcore about any one sport (except perhaps IU basketball), and sports are not at the top of my life’s interests. Nevertheless, I’m a sports fan.
But Ben’s columns? It didn’t matter what sport he was writing about, I read every word. He’s a true wordsmith (no pun intended). But more than that, his knowledge, humor and creativity are genius. He makes you scratch your head and think, “How in the world did he come up with that phrase, that analogy, that concept?”
And now to Ben: Thank you. Thank you for years of reading enjoyment. I will miss you. However, I applaud you for wanting to spend more time with your family and other interests. Congratulations on a wonderfully successful career.
And that book you’re writing…I’ll be first in line to buy it.
