Car-theft plan ends in fight, charges

A 24-year-old Fort Wayne man faces a preliminary charge of battery causing serious bodily injury after a fight over a proposed car theft.

The victim, Matthew Martin Brown, was interviewed by police at a Fort Wayne hospital where he was suffering from possible multiple facial fractures, including a broken jaw, broken nose and eye socket, according to court documents.

He told police he was assaulted by Ian Joseph Barnes, of the 400 block of Putnam Avenue, according to court documents.

Barnes told police the victim came to his house Saturday and they played cards and drank.

At some point, they got into an argument when Brown suggested a friend steal a vehicle belonging to a friend of Barnes’ and offered $2,000 to do it. Barnes said the two scuffled and fell to the ground but denied hitting him. Police noted he had several cuts and scrapes on his arms and hands, according to court documents.
