Concordia shocks SAC champs

Concordia upset the reigning SAC champions 31-21 in the season opener at North Side on Friday.

The game remained scoreless throughout the first quarter. The Cadets scored first in the second followed by two straight North Side scores to give them a 14-7 lead going into halftime.

Concordia equalized following the break and earned the lead for good with 1:19 left in the quarter.

Daniel Sparks completed 18 of 31 passes for 190 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions and Peterson Kerlegrand rushed for 173 yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown for the Cadets.

Quarterback Arion Nieves completed 12 of 25 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns for North Side.

CARROLL 40, GOSHEN 7: At Goshen, Carroll’s Cody Dinan completed 10 of 22 pass attempts for 178 yards and four touchdowns. Blake Schumacher rushed for 140 yards on 16 carries for the Chargers.

Carroll led 21-7 at halftime and then scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

BISHOP DWENGER 52, SOUTH SIDE 6: At Zollner Stadium, Cody Miller completed six of 10 passes for 97 yards and three touchdowns for the Saints.

Dwenger scored 21 points in the first quarter and followed that up with 24 in the second.

EAST NOBLE 38, NORTHROP 13: At East Noble, Harold Wolfe completed 12 passes for 177 yards and rushed for 62 yards for the Knights.

Jason Ash rushed for 83 yards over 15 carries for the Bruins.

CHURUBUSCO 33, LAKELAND 19: At Lakeland, Chance Gallmeier passed for a school-record 164 yards over three receptions for three touchdowns for the Eagles. Churubusco passed for 178 yards on four completions.

GARRETT 39, PRAIRIE HEIGHTS 7: At Garrett, Tanner Burns completed 11 of 13 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns and Bryit Sumner rushed for 136 yards over 15 carries and a touchdown for the Railroaders. Kordell Kessler had 95 receiving yards for a touchdown.

COLUMBIA CITY 33, WARSAW 21: At Columbia City, Jake Mangas completed 15 of 29 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns for Warsaw.

The Eagles scored 13 points in the first quarter before the Tigers turned around and won the second 14-0. Columbia City won the second half, 20-7.

NORTHFIELD 29, BLUFFTON 27: At Bluffton, Jacob Wenger completed 11 of 21 passes for 193 yards, and Javon Morgan rushed for 137 yards on 19 attempts for the Tigers and Josh Bickel rushed for 156 yards on 22 attempts.

The Norse led 20-13 at halftime before the Tigers outscored them 14-9 in the second half to make it tighter.

WEST NOBLE 45, CENTRAL NOBLE 14: At West Noble, Waylon Richardson passed 114 yards for two touchdowns and rushed eight yards over five carries for one touchdown, and Bradley Martin rushed 141 yards over 10 carries for two touchdowns for the Chargers.

Robert Smiley rushed for two touchdowns for the Cougars.

West Noble scored 20 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second and 12 in the third.

WOODLAN 57, EASTSIDE 33: At Eastside, Shawn Kitzmiller rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns and Mitchell VanBrocklin for 170 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors.

P.J. Dean rushed for 117 yards and one touchdown and Conner Dove 61 yards and two touchdowns for the Blazers.

WAWASEE 34, WHITKO 12: At Whitko, Gage Reinhard completed 13 of 22 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors.

Tanner Hughes rushed 110 yards over 26 carries and Gerrett Elder added 168 yards over 10 carries for the Wildcats. Elder also rushed for 168 yards on 10 attempts with one touchdown.

FREMONT AT BLACKFORD, PPD: Due to heavy flooding at Blackford, the game was rescheduled to 7:30 p.m. today.
