Noble County man pinned by equipment dies

A 72-year-old man died in Noble County on Thursday night after being pinned between a pan scraper excavator and a trailer, the Noble County sheriff's department said today.

Phillip A. Longsworth was attempting to remove a strap holding the excavator on the trailer about 6:45 p.m., the sheriff's department said in a statement.

After releasing the tension on the strap, the excavator rolled, causing Longworth to be pinned, the statement said. He died at the scene of the incident near Avilla.

The Avilla police and fire departments and Indiana State Police assisted the sheriff's department in its investigation.
