The woman found dead in her northwest Fort Wayne home this month was beaten to death with a fire poker and her bank card was used in a shopping spree, according to new details made available Wednesday in court filings.
Meanwhile, Zachary D. Reinders, 23, of the 5800 block of Le Steele Boulevard, remained in custody on preliminary charges of murder, felony murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. He was arrested Tuesday.
The affidavit filed Wednesday said 78-year-old Diane Woods’ wallet was found in a trash can at Reinders’ home nearby, and her blood was on a pair of Reinders’ shoes.
A tip to police said a man named Zach, who goes by the name Breeze, was the one who killed Woods, and he then used her bank card to go shopping, the affidavit said.
Police eventually found the person who claimed he went with Reinders on Aug. 8 – the day Woods was found – to use her card to buy electronics and clothing.
The men bought a PlayStation 4, a video game, shoes, a ball cap and jewelry.
The source also told police he saw a television from Woods’ house in Reinders’ trunk.
Woods died from blunt force injury to her head, and her death was declared a homicide. There have been nine homicides this year in Allen County.
Reinders did not make any statements to police and requested an attorney.
