Rhinestones bedeck nails of local women

In Fort Wayne, it’s all about the sparkle.

The local trend seems to be rhinestones on the nails, says Rosie Doan of Queen Nails, 5129 Illinois Road.

“We do it every day. It’s not difficult,” she says. “The colors come with it, and we just put it on with different designs. There are all sorts of things we do with rhinestones.”

Doan says it’s a copycat business; if women see a style they like in a magazine or in person, they’ll try to recapture it for themselves.

“Normally, they will bring in pictures,” Doan says. “They will see a color or on Instagram or Facebook, or see what their friends have out there, and they just come in and get it done that way.”

Charles Luong, owner of Tiffany Nails, 5988 Stellhorn Road, says his shop focuses on having a nail design last longer.

“There used to be the airbrush design, but nobody does the airbrush anymore,” Luong says.

“Some of the big cities do the 3-D and do the sparkle acrylic. A lot of people can’t afford it. For some, it’s like $45 or $50, and every time you get it done, it’s about $40. Some are a little cheaper – $35 – but it’s still a lot of money.

“Before the recession, people would come every two weeks,” he says. “We focus on quality. At my salon, we try to make their nails last longer so that they can save their money. After that time, customers would stretch it out to like three weeks or a month, and now it becomes the norm.”
