Shepard to receive democracy award

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site has announced Randall T. Shepard of Evansville as the recipient of the 2014 Advancing American Democracy Award. The award recognizes an individual who in an exemplary way advances the values of American democracy by encouraging and enabling ethical citizen participation in government. Former Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Shepard has respectfully upheld Indiana constitutional traditions and our heritage of rule of law and, in doing so, strengthened our democracy, according to a news release. Judge John D. Tinder of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit will present the award to Shepard at the 9th Annual Mary Tucker Jasper Speaker Series on Sept. 11 in Indianapolis. “We are privileged to bestow this annual award on Chief Justice Shepard for his amazing accomplishments, contributions and judicial excellence,” said Phyllis Geeslin, president & CEO, Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. “The Chief Justice has truly helped advance the cause of democracy as a servant-leader for Indiana’s judiciary. We honor him for his creative vision, his dedication, and his legacy of distinction in which he served 25 years of leadership in our state’s legal system.” Past recipients have included former U.S. Sen. Richard G. Lugar, former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton, Judge Sarah Evans Barker and Donald C. "Danny" Danielson.
