Out-of-control collision kills 1

A Fort Wayne man was killed early Friday in northwest Allen County after his car was hit in the driver’s side by an out-of-control van, police said.

Matthew A. Kever, 30, was headed north on U.S. 33 near Hildebrand Road when a van going the other direction hit Kever’s car, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.

Kever tried to miss the van and swerved but could not escape the collision about 3:20 a.m., police said.

The driver of the van, who was not yet identified, was traveling south on U.S. 33 pulling a trailer when the van went off the road for an unknown reason, police said.

The driver overcorrected and ended up in oncoming traffic.

Despite Kever’s efforts to avoid the van, police said it hit his driver door, and he died at the scene.

Kever was wearing his seat belt, according to the coroner’s office.

The driver of the van was not injured.

Kever’s death is Allen County’s 15th traffic fatality this year.
