1 arrested, heroin seized in traffic stop

Verduzco-Velasquez

A driver stopped on a traffic violation Thursday led Allen County police on a foot chase through Greenlawn Memorial Park, and deputies found more than a kilogram of heroin in his vehicle, police said today.

Miguel Verduzco-Velazquez, 32, was charged with dealing in a Schedule II controlled substance and two misdemeanor charges, according to Allen Superior Court records. He was being held at the county jail on $51,500 bond.

They said a county police officer stopped Verduzco-Velazquez about 6:20 p.m. on Covington Road on a traffic violation. The officer determined the driver had a suspended license, police said, and when he exited his squad car, Verduzco-Velazquez got out and ran.

Officers chased him through the cemetery and caught him a short time later, police said.

A search of the vehicle by a police K-9 alerted for the possible presence of narcotics, police said, and police discovered heroin with an estimated street value of more than $70,000.
