Life sentence issued in Mercer slayings

CELINA, Ohio – One of two men charged in the 2011 home-invasion slayings of a disabled man and his caretaker daughter in Fort Recovery has been sentenced to life in prison.

Bryant Rhoades, 23, was charged in March 2013 in the killings of Colleen Grube, 47, and her father Robert Grube, 70. They were found dead and bound by duct tape in November 2011 in their ransacked farm home.

The Lima News reported ( Rhoades pleaded guilty Tuesday, after he originally backed out of a first plea deal attempt and demanded a trial. The prosecution sought the death penalty for Rhodes but agreed to the plea deal sparing his life.

Rhoades’ co-defendant Trevin Sanders, who was 17 at the time of the crime, has also pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
