Dead 100-year-old woman found in flooded basement

WARREN, Mich. – The body of a 100-year-old woman was found in her flooded condominium basement the day after heavy rain swamped much of the area, the mayor of a Detroit suburb said.

Warren Mayor James Fouts said the woman’s daughter went to check on her welfare Tuesday and discovered the body. He said it appears the woman drowned.

The death is the second being blamed on storms that dumped 5.2 inches of rain Monday on Warren. A 30-year-old Sterling Heights woman suffered seizures and died after her vehicle became trapped in high water.

Fouts declared a local state of emergency Tuesday afternoon and asked Gov. Rick Snyder for help from the state. Fouts said about 1,000 vehicles had been abandoned in floodwaters in the suburb where many roads were closed.
