22-year-old charged in sunglasses theft

A 22-year-old Fort Wayne man was charged with theft, accused of taking nearly $2,000 in Oakley sunglasses from a local store.

According to court documents, Daniel Castro, of the 2600 block of Indiana Avenue, approached the Oakley display several times inside the Longe Optical store, 7625 Southtown Crossing.

He walked out of the store. Store employees were distracted by a woman and her children who were there for an appointment, but eventually he walked out of the store with them at a fast pace, according to court documents.

Store staff noticed the Oakley display was missing items and saw Castro get into a white Jeep and drive away at a fast pace, according to court documents. Police conducted surveillance on the address where the Jeep was parked.

When officers approached the vehicle, Castro handed them a gray plastic bag containing the sunglasses, valued at $1,600, and said the woman and her children, who were also in the car, had “nothing to do with it,” court documents said.
