6 escape apartment fire

Six people escaped without injury from a fire in their apartment complex Monday night.

Batallion Commander Jeff Berning said a resident of Three Fountains Apartments called the Fort Wayne Fire Department shortly before 11 p.m. because she smelled smoke. When crews arrived at 4029 Hessen Cassel, they found the fire in the apartment next door behind the dryer.

Six people from the apartments on either side of the fire had to leave their homes.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire in 17 minutes, but crews stayed for more than an hour to make sure the fire was out in the space between the apartments, Berning said.

The apartment sustained minor smoke, water and fire damage.

The fire is under investigation.
