Verbatim: City Utilities, INDOT cooperate on emergency pipe work

The city of Fort Wayne issued this news release today:

Fort Wayne, Ind. -- As the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) worked to reconstruct the Lima Road (US 27), Fort Wayne City Utilities discovered a broken sewer pipe that needs replaced.

To save money and to avoid having to close and tear up a completed road in the near future, City Utilities asked INDOT to allow them to make the repair now. The Board of Public Works approved the emergency repair work, earlier this week, and the new pipe is being installed under Lima Road near Norfolk Avenue.

The City and INDOT often partner on projects and cooperatively look for ways to reduce costs. The pipe installation is expected to be completed by the end of next week at which time the Lima construction project will continue.

E&B Paving is the prime contractor and Land Construction will replace the sewer pipe. The pipe and installation is funded by sewer utility funds. The cost of the replacement is lower because the Utility will not have to repave the road, since it is already under construction.
