A man accused of causing a ruckus at a Leesburg convenience store and then breaking into a funeral home a few miles away to steal children’s DVDs was being held without bond Wednesday after he was arrested the prior morning.
Warsaw resident Austin J. Grindle, 19, was jailed after police said they saw him climb through a broken window on his way out of a funeral home in Milford.
The ordeal began about 6:45 a.m. when employees at Katie’s Kwik Mart in Leesburg called police because of Grindle’s behavior at the store, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
Grindle left while police were headed to the store, according to the sheriff’s department, but a 911 call about 15 minutes later said a motorcycle matching Grindle’s was seen circling Mishler Funeral Home in Milford.
The motorcycle was parked at the funeral home when Milford police arrived, and Grindle climbed out of the building through a broken window shortly thereafter, according to the sheriff’s department.
Police said it appeared Grindle was trying to steal children’s DVDs from the funeral home.
He was arrested on a preliminary charge of burglary to a business.
