Driver in Steuben airlifted after wreck

An Angola man who police believe fell asleep at the wheel and crashed was airlifted to a hospital at 6 a.m. Sunday.

Nathan Lee West, 25, was traveling northbound on Interstate 69 in Steuben County, when his 2009 Jeep Liberty traveled off the east side of the road and down into a culvert, then struck a sign and hit a concrete wall, according to Indiana State Police.

West, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time, suffered a broken right leg and a head injury and was transported via helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation.
