Family of 5 escapes; home damaged after fire

Three children and two adults escaped injuries Saturday after a fire broke out in the kitchen area of a home.

All five residents of the home at 741 W. DeWald St. had already evacuated when the fire department arrived about 10:40 a.m., the department said.

Firefighters found the fire burning in the kitchen and nearby utility room and had it under control in eight minutes, the department said.

The two-story home had moderate damage from the fire, water and smoke.

The cause remained under investigation Saturday.
