LaGrange County woman killed in rollover crash

A passenger died Friday night after her driver in Steuben County swerved to avoid hitting someone walking on the side of the road, according to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim, Deanna Shroyer, 43, of LaGrange County, was ejected from a vehicle driven by Daniel Shroyer, 41, on County Road 100 N near County Road 600 W. She was pronounced dead at an Angola Hospital. Daniel Shroyer, also of LaGrange, was ejected, too, and airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with injuries that were not life-threatening, the sheriff's statement said.

The crash happened at 9 p.m. Friday when Daniel Shroyer was driving westbound over a hill on County Road 100 N and swerved to avoid hitting a woman on the side of the road, the statement said.

The woman, Kenetha Duncan, 46, was alerting oncoming traffic that Edward Duncan, 49, was trying to reattach a utility trailer to his vehicle near the bottom of a hill on County Road 100 N.

Edward Duncan said the trailer detached when he swerved to avoid a deer, the statement said.

When Daniel Shroyer swerved to avoid hitting Kenetha Duncan, he lost control of his vehicle, which went off the road and rolled several times, the statement said.

Edward and Kenetha Duncan were not injured. Police said it is believed that Deanna Shroyer was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, and it is believed that Daniel Shroyer was not wearing his.

The accident remains under investigation.
