Natural gas leak forces evacuations

A natural gas leak Wednesday morning on Fort Wayne’s north side prompted the evacuation of patients and employees from two medical office buildings in the area.

Shortly before 8 a.m., construction crews hit a gas line on Auburn Road near the intersection with the on-ramp to Interstate 469, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Eighty-two staff and patients of two medical office buildings near the site of the leak were evacuated as a precaution, the department said.

Employees of a business on Dupont Circle Court first alerted the fire department about the leak after they smelled natural gas in the area.

About 21/2 hours later, the leak was fixed, and business returned to normal for the evacuees.
