Vick embraces mentor role

– Michael Vick believes he can still start in the NFL.

The New York Jets quarterback also believes he can still be a star.

Right now, he’s in line to back up Geno Smith this season. And, just as he did last year in Philadelphia, he’s doing everything he can as a high-profile mentor to help a young quarterback get better.

That doesn’t mean Vick isn’t hungry to be what he once was: one of the league’s most dynamic players who causes defensive coordinators headaches. He’s 34, though, and those opportunities are dwindling.

But Vick isn’t complaining. He’s embracing his role as someone Smith can learn from – while also competing for a job he may or may not have a chance to win.

Colts re-sign back, sideline linebacker

The Colts re-signed running back Davin Meggett after putting linebacker Aaron Morgan on injured reserve Sunday.

Indianapolis did not say what Morgan’s injury was.

Meggett, the son of former NFL running back Dave Meggett, played at the University of Maryland and was on the Colts practice squad in December 2012 but has not played in an NFL game.

Morgan joined the Colts on Dec. 31 and has played in 18 career games.

Caldwell has shot at winning quickly

Detroit is beginning training camp under another new coach – but for once, there’s no long rebuilding project ahead.

Jim Caldwell spoke to reporters Sunday, which was reporting day at training camp for Detroit’s veterans. Detroit squandered a great chance to make the playoffs last year, losing six of their last seven and finishing 7-9. That collapse cost coach Jim Schwartz his job, and Caldwell took over.
