Conservancy foundation buys wetlands property

The Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation said Monday it has purchased 44 1/2 acres along the southeast corner of Syracuse Lake as part of its mission to preserve and protect the Wawasee Area Watershed.

The property, located near East Shore Drive and Cornelius Road includes the Bonar Lake wetlands, Syracuse Lake wetlands and about 950 feet of shoreline. The price was not disclosed.

"The property is the confluence of Syracuse, Wawasee, Bonar and Mud lakes and its preservation and protection is vitally important to our mission," said Sam Leman, chairman of the foundation's board, in a statement. "This property, along with other WACF acquisitions, extends the protected Syracuse Lake Wetlands from the lake east to Warner Road."?

The purchase brings the protected wetland to nearly 820 acres and more than 12 miles of shoreline, according to Tom Yoder, a foundation board member and chairman of its land acquisition committee.
