Overnight gunfire on south side wounds 3 people

Three people were shot as gunfire – some of it from large-caliber rifles – erupted on Fort Wayne’s south side during a three-hour span from Friday night into early Saturday.

The violence began about 10:45 p.m. when a woman was shot in the arm as two cars nearby chased and shot at each other in the area of Hanna Street and Pettit Avenue, according to a Fort Wayne police report.

The woman was driving when she was shot and made it to South Anthony Boulevard and McKinnie Avenue to call police.

Police found four bullet holes in her car, including one in the rear window.

Officers found several shell casings in the 4700 block of South Hanna Street, including 14 casings from ammunition used in semiautomatic or automatic rifles, the report said.

As police were investigating that shooting, another woman who was shot showed up at a hospital.

The report does not say where the shooting occurred, but the woman’s car had several bullet holes in it.

A couple of hours later, shortly after 1 a.m., police were investigating yet another shooting, this time a man who was shot in the hip as he walked through an apartment complex.

The man told police he was walking through Eden Green when he noticed a newer, gray Chevrolet Impala approaching him, and then someone in the car started shooting.

The victim called his father to take him to the hospital.

A half-hour later, city police were summoned to the night’s final report of a shooting, this time on a report of an many as 10 people who were shot in the area of Lafayette Street and East Wildwood Avenue.

Police did not find any shooting victims but did find plenty of evidence of gunfire.

Along East Wildwood, officers found numerous shell casings from two different caliber handguns and several casings for rounds fired from semiautomatic or automaticrifles, the reports said.

Four cars in the area were hit by bullets.

A resident in the area told police he heard about 20 gunshots before he saw a man run to a red Ford SUV and quickly leave the scene.

None of the injuries was life-threatening.
