The Whitley County Auditor’s Office is the subject of a police investigation after the county’s commissioners found discrepancies in some accounts.
The commissioners on Thursday contacted the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office and requested the investigation, according to a news release from the prosecutor.
Whitley County Commissioner Chair George Schrumpf said Friday that the commissioners asked the auditor, Jenny McGuire, to take a voluntary leave of absence during the investigation.
Schrumpf said the commissioners recently met with the Indiana State Board of Accounts and that the inquiry into the auditor’s office evolved from that meeting, but he did not say why the commissioners met with state officials.
The commissioners found “some discrepancies in accounts” and then turned the matter over to the prosecutor’s office, Schrumpf said.
He said it was too early to comment on the specifics of those discrepancies.
Whitley County Prosecutor Matt Rentschler said misappropriation of funds is part of the investigation.
Because the investigation involves a county department, the Indiana State Police will take the lead on it, but the prosecutor’s office investigator will also be involved, Rentschler said.
“We’re trying to be as transparent as possible,” Schrumpf said.
The prosecutor’s office said “appropriate action” will be taken once the investigation is finished.
