Maliha means 'strong, beautiful' in a Nepalese language

The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo's 6-week-old red panda cub has been given a name that means "strong and beautiful" in a Nepalese language, the zoo said today.

Maliha is the first red panda cub born at the zoo in the last three years to survive longer than two weeks, the zoo said in a statement. She now weighs about 1 1/4 pounds, about four times her birth weight.

Maliha was named by zookeeper Helena Lacey, who works with the red pandas daily. The cub is monitored via a remote camera in the nest box, but the zoo said guests have little chance of seeing her until late August or early September.

Red pandas are native to Nepal and China, the zoo said.
