A statement issued Tuesday morning by the Winona Lake Police Department:

On July 21, 2014, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Kosciusko County 911 Center received a call for an accident involving a 2007 GMC pickup truck driven by Richard Riedel of Mentone and a bicyclist at the intersection of CR 250E and Lexington Drive.

Off duty Warsaw fire and police personnel had arrived and were providing care to a 10-year-old boy who had been struck by the pickup truck.

The boy was transported by Multi-Twp EMS to Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital and listed in critical condition.

Based on the pickup driver’s statement and witness statements, the 10-year-old failed to stop at a stop sign when exiting Lexington Drive and entered the roadway in front of the southbound pickup truck. The driver was unable to avoid the collision.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in this accident.

The accident was investigated by the Winona Lake Police Department. Assisting with the accident were members of the Kosciusko County Sheriff Department, Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. Team, Warsaw Police Department, Winona Lake Fire Department, Warsaw Fire Department and Multi-Twp EMS.
