Allen jail inmate hangs self in cell

Was set to plead guilty to low-level felony

A Fort Wayne man who committed suicide at the Allen County Jail was set to plead guilty to a low-level felony charge later this summer.

Robert Stanley Tyrrell, 48, was found hanging by a bedsheet in his cell at the jail about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Allen County coroner ruled Monday that Tyrrell died from asphyxia due to hanging and that he had committed suicide.

The Allen County Sheriff's Department is conducting an investigation into the death, a spokesman for the department said.

The last person to commit suicide at the jail was a 46-year-old man who hanged himself in 2012.

Tyrrell was serving time with the jail's general population.

His criminal record was not extensive, though it began in 1987 with a misdemeanor arrest for operating a vehicle while suspended.

Tyrrell, whose last listed home address was in the 800 block of Putnam Street, pleaded guilty in Allen Superior Court to a Class D felony drug possession charge in 2010.

He was given a two-year suspended sentence but ordered to serve two years' probation, which he violated, according to Allen Superior Court records.

In 2012, he was ordered to serve the two-year suspended prison sentence in the Allen County work release program.

In December 2012, Allen County prosecutors charged him with failure to return to lawful detention.

After that warrant was issued, Tyrrell next appeared in the court record as having an initial hearing on that charge back in May of this year, which is when he was initially booked into jail.

Tyrrell was scheduled to enter a guilty plea to that charge, a Class D felony, in September, according to court records.
