VERNON, Ind. – A judge has sentenced a southern Indiana man to 70 years in prison for fatally shooting his ex-wife and wounding her daughter.
A Jennings County jury convicted James Sowder, 64, of Seymour in May of voluntary manslaughter, burglary and other charges in connection with the 2012 shooting that killed Candice Sowder, 64, and seriously wounded Regina Johnson, then 42, at their home near North Vernon.
The Republic of Columbus reported (http://bit.ly/1qczRxI ) a judge ordered that Sowder serve consecutive 35-year sentences for the manslaughter and burglary convictions.
He was originally charged with murder and attempted murder, but jurors convicted him of the lesser charges.
County Prosecutor Alan Marshall said Sowder had several previous misdemeanor convictions, including two counts of battery against his ex-wife.
