GARY, Ind. – Organizers say they expect 600 to 1,000 law enforcement personnel to attend the funeral of a Gary police officer slain in the line of duty.
The funeral for Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield was scheduled for Monday at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary. Besides the law enforcement officers from Indiana, Illinois and other states, organizers were expecting hundreds of others to attend the funeral.
Westerfield was found shot to death July 6 on his 47th birthday. Police have a person of interest in custody, but charges haven’t been filed yet and the investigation is ongoing. The name of the person of interest hasn’t been released.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in Westerfield’s slaying.
