Crash into police car spurs chase, charges

A Fort Wayne man faces several charges after he was accused of crashing into a city detective’s police car and then fleeing from police.

On Monday night, Detective Derrick Demorest was stopped at a light on South Hanna Street at Pettit Avenue when a car rear-ended him.

As Demorest got out of his car, the person who hit him backed up, made a U-turn and took off in the opposite direction, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The chase reached speeds up to 70 mph along several streets in the area before the car pulled over and the driver got down on the ground, the report said.

Police collected a bag of what appeared to be marijuana that was thrown from the car during the chase.

The driver, identified as Ernest Hatch Jr., 44, was charged with resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, marijuana possession and failure to stop after an accident resulting in damage to a vehicle.

A breath test showed that Hatch had a blood-alcohol content of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit in Indiana.
