MERRILLVILLE, Ind. – An 80-year-old woman was fatally stabbed at a northwest Indiana hospital and her 88-year-old husband was stabbed to death inside their home, authorities said.

Police said a person of interest is in custody in connection with the deaths at Methodist Hospital Southlake in Merrillville and the home in Gary.

The hospital stabbing happened about 12:30 a.m. Friday and the hospital was placed on lockdown for about four hours.

The Lake County coroner’s office said Margarine and James Haywood both died from multiple stab wounds.

Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram said James Haywood was found dead when officers went to the house after the hospital attack.

Ingram said the person in custody knew both victims, but declined to provide details about the relationship.
