Beginning this weekend, there will be plenty of cans of soda and beer or bottles of water consumed as people attending the Three Rivers Festival make their way downtown.
And now there will be plenty of chances for those items to be recycled.
Fort Wayne officials unveiled new Borrow-a-Bins that will be used at the festival beginning this weekend. Afterward, they will be available for other large events.
The bins are carts that combine garbage and recycling receptacles in one. A plastic bag that can hold roughly 225 to 250 bottles and cans attaches to the garbage bins.
There will be 50 carts available for loan to event organizers, free of charge, city officials said.
We’ve found that people want to recycle at home and that they want to at events, too, said Frank Suarez, a city spokesman.
Event organizers who want to use the bins must pre-register at least a week in advance to secure one.
While these carts are free to use, event organizers can be charged a $20 cleaning fee if the containers come back dirty or a $60 fee if they don’t come back at all.
City officials said the carts are expected to be placed around plazas and in Junk Food Alley during the festival.
