TinCaps lose 10th straight

They ducked history once, tying it up just when all seemed lost.

But then the TinCaps stuck their head up again Tuesday night in Midland, Mich. And history, and the Great Lakes Loons, knocked it off.

Webster Rivas’ leadoff homer to left off Nick Mutz in the bottom of the ninth handed the Loons (8-9, 43-45) a 5-4 victory, and the TinCaps shook hands with 19 years of futility. The loss was their 10th straight, a bleak stretch matched only between May 13-23, 1995, when the team was the Wizards.

This loss was all the more disheartening given that the TinCaps (5-13, 35-52) erased a 4-1 deficit with a three-run ninth of their own.

Back-to-back singles by Fernando Perez and Franmill Reyes off Great Lakes reliever Mark Pope and a base on balls issued to Nick Schulz loaded the bases, and then Reynaldo Bruguera’s RBI single and Josh VanMeter’s two-run single completed the rally.
