Blog pegs Stutzman distant 3rd in whip race

U.S. House Republicans did not release vote totals in their June 19 election for majority whip among three candidates, including Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd.

Roll Call’s Matt Fuller took a stab at the count in a Tuesday blog, basing his numbers on an interview with a caucus member.

Fuller wrote that his “reasonable guess” for the secret ballot would be 127 votes for the winner, California Rep. Steve Scalise; 77 for Illinois Rep. Peter Roskam; and 26 for Stutzman.

Fuller reported that two lawmakers cast write-in votes for colleagues who did not run for whip, the leadership position responsible for gauging how caucus members will vote on legislation.
