1,500 Fort Wayne I&M customers without power

Full local restoration expected by 6 p.m. Wednesday, utility says

About 1,500 I&M customers remained without power Tuesday night, and some won't be restored until 6 p.m. Wednesday, the utility said.

Ninety percent of the customers will get their power back by midnight Tuesday, Indiana Michigan Power said in a statement.

The early Tuesday storms knocked out 15 utility poles, 10 transformers and eight crossarms in the city, the statement said.

It said 54,000 customers were out of service in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan -- South Bend has 18,600 customers out of service, and shouldn't expect all customers to be back before 6 p.m. Saturday.

And in Benton Harbor, Michigan, 15,800 customers remain without power, and shouldn't expect full restoration until midnight Saturday, I&M said.

It said it would be using crews from the area, elsewhere in Indiana and Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia to make needed repairs.
