Police say driver runs, leaving kids

A Garrett man was arrested early Friday after police said he abandoned two children in his car as he took off on foot from a traffic stop.

About 3:50 a.m., a DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy stopped Steven R. Nolen Jr., 26, on Interstate 69 for a traffic infraction.

But at some point Nolen ran from the car, crossed all four lanes of the interstate and went into a field, police said.

Two children were left behind in the car.

Officers from several area police departments and a police dog from Auburn eventually found Nolen hiding behind weeds in a water-filled ditch.

The Department of Child Services took care of the children and later placed them with their mother, police said.

Nolen was booked on charges of neglect of a dependent, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a legend drug, resisting law enforcement and driving with a suspended license.
