Kayaker, 54, missing on St. Marys River

Indiana conservation officers are searching the St. Marys River in Decatur for a missing kayaker.

On Friday evening, two kayaks were near the 2700 block of North U.S. 33 when one of them struck a log jam and turned over, according to a statement issued Saturday by conservation officers. The kayaker was thrown into the water and did not resurface.

He has been identified as Steven Seitz, 54, of Decatur. Search efforts continued Saturday afternoon.

The 911 call came in to Adams County Communications at 8:22 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday, conservation officers resumed searching the river using divers and Sonar. Indiana State Police also sent in divers.

Seitz was not wearing a life jacket when the boat overturned, the conservation officers said.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Department and Decatur Fire Department are also assisting.
