Moped rider killed

A Garrett man died late Thursday in a moped crash on Baseline Road in Noble County, the county sheriff's department said today. The sheriff’s department said it was called to an accident on Baseline Road east of County Road 900 East about midnight Thursday after a driver reported striking a moped on the side of the road. As officers were heading to the scene, the driver, Ryan L. Foster, 18, of Kendallville, called back stating he had discovered the moped’s rider but did not know his condition, police said.

Upon arrival, Avilla firefighters discovered Jeffrey M. Bogenschutz, 53, of Garrett, and determined he had died at the scene.

Evidence suggested Bogenschutz lost control of the moped while driving east and ended up off the road beside the moped, police said. It said Foster's vehicle came by later, striking the moped.

Avilla police, Parkview Noble EMS and the county coroner's office also assisted following the accident, which remains under investigation.
