A Garrett man was arrested today after running from his car and leaving two children behind during an Interstate 69 traffic stop, the DeKalb County sheriff's department said.
Steven R. Nolen Jr., 26, was charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent, two counts of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, one count of possession of a Schedule III controlled substance, four counts of possession of a legend drug and two misdemeanors.
Police said they were patrolling the northbound interstate near the 334 mile marker about 3:45 a.m. when they stopped Nolen's vehicle.
During the stop, police said, Nolen fled on foot across the interstate and into a field on the west side of the highway. They said one officer remained with the two children in the car while another pursued the suspect on foot.
Waterloo, Auburn, Butler and Indiana State police responded to set up a perimeter of the area, police said. They said Nolen was found in a ditch line submerged in water, hiding behind weeds, between County Road 27 and Interstate 69, north of County Road 28.
The children were placed into the care of the Department of Child Services and later released to their mother, police said.
