Medical issue cited in driver’s fatal crash into pond

A man who died when he drove his van into in a pond in early June had suffered a sudden medical problem, according to the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner’s office did not say what specifically happened to 32-year-old Elijah M. Tanner early on June 5. He was headed south on Lima Road near Hathaway Road and suddenly crossed into northbound traffic and drove into a pond, the Allen County Sheriff’s Department said.

Tanner’s van ended up about 50 feet into the pond and was submerged when rescuers arrived. Tanner was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.

Tanner’s death was the seventh traffic-related death this year in Allen County.
