‘Medical event’ preceded pond death

A ruling has been issued in the death of Elijah M. Tanner, a 32-year-old man who died June 5 after the van he was driving went into a pond near Huntertown.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office ruled the death an accident and the cause of death as drowning.

It has been determined that “Tanner experienced a medical event prior to the crash,” Tuesday’s ruling said.

The Fort Wayne man was headed south on Lima Road near Hathaway Road when the work van he was driving crossed into northbound traffic and launched about 50 feet into a pond, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.

Tanner’s van was underwater when rescuers arrived and he was still belted in to the driver’s seat when divers freed him from the vehicle. Tanner was taken in critical condition to a hospital where he died.

Tanner’s death was the seventh traffic-related fatality this year in Allen County.
