Council to decide if veto stands

6 yeas tonight could settle fate of collective bargaining

– City Council members will decide tonight whether to override the mayor’s veto of their ban on collective bargaining for city employees who are not police or firefighters.

Council members voted along party lines to repeal city laws recognizing six of the nine unions representing city workers. Mayor Tom Henry vetoed the change.

The six Republicans on the council supported the repeal of collective bargaining; the three Democrats opposed it. It takes six votes to override a mayoral veto.

The city has about 1,800 employees. The ordinance ends collective bargaining for about 500 of them.

There are about 750 employees in the city’s three police and fire unions who are unaffected by the change, a fact opponents say undercuts Republican arguments that the move is to save money because it exempts the largest group of employees.

The meeting takes place at 5:30 p.m. today on the lower level of Citizens Square. The public comment portion of the meeting, when the microphone is open to anyone who wants to speak, comes at the end, after all the votes have been cast.
