TinCaps, Whitecaps split series

Adolfo Reina’s third inning go-ahead two-run homer led the TinCaps in a 4-2 win over West Michigan at Comstock Park, Michigan, on Sunday afternoon to split a four-game series to open the second half.

Fort Wayne (32-41) opened scoring in on a Jake Bauers RBI single to knock in Ronnie Richardson.

The Whitecaps (43-31) responded in the second with runs from Dominic Ficociello and Jeff Holm to take a 2-1 lead.

Reina’s homer in the third, his second of the season, brought in Bauers to give the TinCaps the lead for good at 3-2.

In the fifth, Bauers’ sacrifice fly brought in Fernando Perez to extend the Fort Wayne lead to 4-2.

Bauers finished 2 for 2 and raised his average to .364.

Payton Baskette (3-3) pitched a career-high six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. He struck out four.

Reliever Eric Yardley pitched perfect seventh and eighth innings, and Nick Mutz pitched a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save.

The TinCaps have today off and open a three-game series with Dayton at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Parkview Field.
