TinCaps open 2nd half with loss

The TinCaps began the second half of the season in disappointing style Thursday with a 15-4 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock, Mich..

Three TinCaps – Mallex Smith, Tyron Guerrero and Nick Mutz – played the Midwest League All-Star game Tuesday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Fort Wayne (0-1 second half, 30-40 overall) committed four errors and gave up 16 hits to West Michigan (1-0, 42-29).

After going up 1-0 in the first inning, the TinCaps fell behind 15-1 before scoring twice in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Erik Cabrera (2-5) took the loss after giving up seven hits and six runs, five earned, in 3 1/3 innings.

The TinCaps had eight hits in the loss, with Ronnie Richardson, Fernando Perez and Jake Bauers each collecting two. Ryan Miller hit a two-run home run in the eighth.

West Michigan scored a run in the third, five in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and four more in the seventh. The Whitecaps got three hits each from Jeff Holm and Willy Adames.

Note: The TinCaps made some roster moves before the game.

Three players – Smith, Guerrero and Coby Cowgill – were called up to Advanced-A Lake Elsinore (Calif.) by the parent San Diego Padres.

The TinCaps then added pitcher Josh Richardson from Lake Elsinore and pitchers Jeffrey Enloe and Jorge Guzman up from short-season Eugene. The TinCaps’ roster currently stands at 24 active players, one below the Midwest League limit.
