Bartender charged in tavern beating

A bartender at a Fort Wayne bar was charged Wednesday with beating a customer and leaving him paralyzed.

Dwayne E. Russell, 43, of the 200 block of East Butler Street, faces charges of aggravated battery and battery that stem from the December beating at Stein Tavern, 3418 Wayne Trace, according to the probable cause affidavit.

According to statements from the victim, other staff and security videos, police determined that Terry L. Woods got into a quarrel with someone Russell was talking to Dec. 28 at the bar.

Woods threw a chair, at which point Russell came out from behind the bar, and he and the customer chased Woods through the bar, according to the report.

Russell picked up a pool cue and hit Woods in the upper back with it before the other customer grabbed Woods in a bear hug and let Russell punch Woods in the face and then body-slam him to the floor, the affidavit said.

Woods suffered a broken arm and ruptured vertebrae in his neck, leaving him paralyzed, according to the affidavit.

Russell was not in custody Wednesday. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
