Parkview Whitley nurse accused of stealing pain medication

A nurse at a Columbia City hospital was arrested Thursday, accused of stealing pain medication for the last several months.

The investigation into 40-year-old Britte E. Smith began when her employer, Parkview Whitley Hospital, suspected she was stealing hydromorphone HCL, a pain medication and controlled substance, according to the Indiana State Police.

A two-month long investigation showed Smith accessed a hospital’s medical station where the medication was held, police said.

Police said the thefts occurred between November and March.

Smith was booked at the Whitley County Jail on charges of interference with medical services, theft and possession of a narcotic drug.

All the charges are felonies.

She was released on $10,000 bond, police said.
