Park Forest pool offers 'Heat Amnesty' admission

Statement as issued Monday by the Park Forest Swim Club:

Fort Wayne: Park Forest Swim Club, a non-profit 501c7 social club , is opening it’s doors to the public this week to provide the community with a healthy and safe way to cool off. The Club has created a special “Heat Amnesty Membership” that is being offered for purchase on a daily basis for only $10.00. “We know swim club family memberships can be expensive,” said Angie Branstetter, Park Forest Swim Club president. “And the public pools can often be crazy-crowded, especially on days that reach into the 90’s. We wanted to give kids especially a safe and supervised environment to cool off and have some fun in the heat. We’re offering an opportunity for a family or individual to pay a special daily fee to enjoy our refreshing water and amenities.” she said.

The legal structure of Park Forest precludes people who are non-members from swimming unless they’re a guest accompanying a member. Creating this special “Heat Amnesty Membership” allows the pool to open their doors to people who are not members but are looking for an uncrowded, healthy and friendly cooling experience during the next several extremely hot and muggy days.

“Heat and humidity can wear down most people’s patience,” Branstetter said. “This is our way of trying to help folks stay cool and collected in the heat.”

Park Forest Swim Club was founded in northeast Fort Wayne in 1968 as a 501c7 non-profit social club to provide social and sporting activities which promoted health, wellness, community, and leadership opportunities of its members through recreational swimming and diving, learn-to-swim lessons for its members and guests, a prep swim team for members and guests, and one of the city’s most talented swim teams in Fort Wayne’s rich aquatic history.

In 2013 we hosted the 20th annual Pete Johnston Memorial Swim Meet, a meet that reaches across the community and engages over 300 community swimmers from up to 11 different participating teams. The meet is held in memory and honor of Pete Johnston, a former Park Forest swimmer and outstanding college swimmer who’s passion for the sport and selfless involvement in teaching and mentoring other young swimming athletes made him an icon in the Fort Wayne swimming community. This year’s Pete Johnston Memorial Swim Meet will be held on Saturday, June 28th. It will be the 21st year for the meet.
