Counts filed in molesting case

A New Haven man was formally charged Friday with two counts of child molesting after a young boy accused him of inappropriately touching him.

The allegations came to light after the boy, identified in court records as 3 years old, told his mother that 20-year-old John D. Conant exposed himself to the child, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Conant was accused of touching the boy in the garage of a family member’s house, the report said.

Conant told police he was in an excited state after he saw a photo on his phone and that led him to act out with the boy, but he stopped when the boy said what Conant wanted to do was “icky,” according to the affidavit.

When the boy’s mother confronted Conant about the allegations, he apparently threatened suicide and checked himself in to an in-patient treatment facility, the report said.

Police also discovered a voice mail he left on the child’s mother’s phone apologizing for what happened.

Conant was being held Friday evening in lieu of $20,000 bail.
