Fore! City to soon own driving range

13 acres abuts sewage ponds, nets $79,900

– The city of Fort Wayne will soon be the owner of a driving range.

Board of Public Works members Wednesday approved the purchase of the driving range at 707 Coliseum Blvd. N.

The 13.3-acre range is on the west side of Coliseum, immediately north of the Maumee River.

Staff said the owner of the property is retiring, and City Utilities was contacted by the real estate agent representing the seller. The negotiated price for the land was $79,900; two appraisals set the value at $81,000 and $82,000.

The land is immediately east of the sewage treatment plant’s ponds on the north side of the river, officials said.

Officials said it can be used to provide better access to the area, for construction staging for upcoming work on Pond 3 and could possibly be used to trade for land needed for the upcoming deep tunnel project.

Board members also approved a $555,075 agreement with civil engineering firm Butler, Fairman & Seufert for design work to widen Maysville Road from Stellhorn to Meijer Drive.

Patrick Zaharako, an engineer for the city, said the project includes widening from two lanes to four, drainage improvements, sidewalks and a trail, a pedestrian bridge over Koester Ditch, traffic signals and water and sewer work.

The project will be paid for by a tax increment financing district, which uses property taxes paid by new development in the area to pay for the infrastructure needed to support that development.

Members also rejected the bids for the Pontiac Rain Garden project after only one bid was submitted, and it was far above estimates for the work.
